The Vulture Mothers

The Vulture Mothers (2023 – ongoing) is an intermedia initiative taking shape as an installation, a series of animations, and a mobile augmented reality experience. The project offers a somatic space of vulture power to push through death to rebirth and regeneration and conjure future harmonies.  Vultures – feared and venerated for their connection with death and decay – are essential to the health of ecosystems across the planet. The Vulture Mothers broadcasts their magnificence.

The Vulture Mothers honors the animals’ corrosive stomach fluids for their resistance to many diseases and infections that sicken other scavengers (foxes, coyotes, jackals). Vultures help prevent sickness from spreading to other animals, including humans. It is only as the impact of their absence is felt that the world begins to understand their importance.
