Séance for Dead Horse Bay. Made for an Underwater New York event as part of Marie Lorenz’s Flow Pool at Recess Art in April, 2016.
In the spring of 2016, I was one of seven artists invited by Underwater New York to contribute to Marie Lorenz’s Flow Pool at Recess Art. Lorenz modeled her pool after a large hydrodynamics test tank, an instrument used to test marine vessels. As I started working on the piece, I considered what would compliment the continuous circulation of water in the pool, and decided to create a raft to carry a looping an animation. I created an animation that honors life underwater in NYC, including ghost life, referencing the history of Dead Horse Bay in Brooklyn. Through the 19th century and into the early 20th, the bay was a dumping ground for bodies from neighboring horse rendering plants that manufactured glue and fertilizer. I am also paying tribute to Muybridge’s Horse in Motion from 1886.
